Welcome to Reception!

Love. Believe. Achieve.

Love one another just as I love you. John 15:12

Miss Smith – Class Teacher

Mrs Morley, Mrs Leyland – Teaching Assistants

Welcome from Miss Smith,

Welcome to Reception! We are so excited to share our learning with you.

At the heart of our Reception class is our school motto: “Love, Believe, Achieve.” This simple but powerful message guides everything we do each day.

Rooted in the Christian teaching, “Love one another just as I have loved you,” the motto helps children to understand the importance of kindness, care and respect for others. We begin by helping children feel loved and safe within their classroom community, so they can grow in confidence and form strong, positive relationships. From this secure foundation, children are encouraged to believe in themselves as capable learners. Through encouragement, praise and carefully supported experiences, they develop confidence, independence and a willingness to try new things. As children grow in love and belief, they are supported to achieve their very best. Whether in their learning, friendships or personal development, we celebrate every step of progress and every success along the way.

Together, “Love, Believe, Achieve” shapes a nurturing environment where every child is valued, supported and inspired to flourish.

We are proud of our Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, which has been thoughtfully designed to maintain high expectations while reflecting how young children learn best: through engaging, play-based experiences that inspire curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

In Reception, the autumn term is centred on developing secure relationships, strengthening communication and language skills, and nurturing children’s natural curiosity through hands-on exploration. Children are encouraged to follow their interests, with skilled adults extending learning through purposeful play and everyday interactions. As the year progresses, the curriculum builds on these strong foundations, becoming increasingly focused with clear progression in early literacy and mathematics, while continuing to prioritise a playful and engaging approach that supports curiosity, creativity, and confidence. This ensures children are well prepared for the transition into Key Stage 1.

Wherever possible, children take part in outdoor learning experiences, exploring and discovering the natural world at first hand. These opportunities help to spark curiosity about their surroundings while also promoting resilience, independence, and a meaningful connection with nature.

P.E.

Reception have PE on a Monday. Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school, including pumps, so that they can participate fully. When the weather is warmer, please ensure that you send a hat as the children will often be outside for P.E.

Early Reading

Reading is central to our curriculum and plays a vital role in developing children’s vocabulary and comprehension. In Reception we develop early reading skills through daily phonics teaching. We complete five, 30 minute reading sessions a week, following our Read, Write, Inc programme.

Reception share a story at the end of every day. This promotes reading for enjoyment and also fosters language development, literacy skills, and brain development.

Please can you ensure that your child is reading at least 4 times per week at home.

At the bottom of this page, you will find lots of photographs of our learning. You can find lots of information about our learning in the curriculum pages at the top. We can’t wait for you to see what we have been up to!

Homework

In the Autumn term, children will bring home sounds they have been learning in Read Write Inc. When they have developed the skills of blending to read children will progress to words and then books with sentences. A learning log is also sent home with activities to consolidate learning.
