Welcome to Year 1

Love. Believe. Achieve.

Love one another just as I love you. John 15:12

Mrs Mellor– Class Teacher

Mrs Atherton, Mrs Hughes – Teaching Assistants

Welcome from Mrs Mellor,

Welcome to Year 1! We are so excited to share our learning with you.

Our curriculum is designed to help children learn lots of new knowledge, build a wide vocabulary, and develop a strong understanding of the world around them. We believe that progress means knowing more and remembering more, so we help children build on what they already know as they learn new skills and ideas.

Guided by our motto—Love, Believe, Achieve—we create a happy and caring classroom where kindness is valued, confidence is nurtured, and every success is celebrated. We enjoy learning together, believe in ourselves and each other, and always try our very best in everything we do.

In Year 1, children learn about the seasons and seasonal change, as well as the Great Fire of London and Samuel Pepys’ diary. Through these exciting topics, we work hard, have fun, and aim to achieve our full potential.

At the bottom of this page, you will find lots of photographs of our learning. You can find lots of information about our learning in the curriculum pages at the top. We can’t wait for you to see what we have been up to!

Our Class Room

Our Curriculum

Here, at St. Catharine’s, we teach our very own bespoke curriculum which has been tailored to meet the needs of all our children. Each unit has been created by the teaching team at school to promote an independent, life-long love of learning, which is inspired by the children’s interests. We hope the children will be as excited as we are! Please click on the button below to see what Year 1 will be learning about this year.

P.E.

Year 1 have PE on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school, including pumps, so that they can participate fully.

Reading

Reading is central to our curriculum and plays a vital role in developing children’s vocabulary and comprehension. In Year 1, we complete five, 30 minute phonics sessions a week, following our Read, Write, Inc programme. We continue our love of reading in our daily English lesson.

Year 1 spend 15 minutes at the end of every afternoon reading a class novel. This promotes reading for enjoyment and also fosters language development, literacy skills, and brain development.

Please can you ensure that your child is reading at least 4 times per week at home and sign your child’s diary.

Homework

In Year 1, the children will complete a home learning log each term. The children have a selection of activities to complete linked to the Year 1 curriculum. This can be completed each week in their homework book or brought in to share with their class friends.
