Our Class Room

Our Curriculum
Here, at St. Catharine’s, we teach a curriculum which has been tailored to meet the needs of all our children. Each unit has been created by the teaching team at school to promote an independent, life-long love of learning. We hope the children will be as excited as we are! Please click on the button below to see what Year Three will be learning about this year.
P.E.
Year 3 have PE on a Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school, including pumps, so that they can participate fully. Children should come to school dressed in their PE kit on this day. When the weather is warmer, please ensure that you send a hat as the children will often be outside for P.E.
Swimming
Year 3 go swimming in the Autumn and first Spring term. Children need to bring their swimming money in weekly, and a full swimming kit. More information about this will be provided by Miss Finch.
Reading
Reading is central to our curriculum and plays a vital role in developing children’s vocabulary and comprehension. In Year 3, we complete five, 30 minute reading lessons a week. Our reading scheme has been designed to maximise opportunity for daily, weekly and monthly review to ensure new vocabulary, concepts, and knowledge are encoded into long-term memory. Our scheme will only be accessed once pupils’ phonemic awareness and phonics are strong enough: therefore, if necessary, children will remain on our phonics programme until they are ready to begin our class reading lessons. Each unit encompasses a range of fluency and vocabulary activities to improve reading comprehension. These sessions are also supplemented with stand alone reading sessions both in English lessons and in the wider curriculum: this supports which helps deepen their understanding of narrative structure and character development, enabling children to explore non-fiction texts and broaden their knowledge across subjects.
Year 3 spend 15 minutes at the start of every afternoon reading a class novel. This promotes reading for enjoyment and also fosters language development, literacy skills, and brain development.
Please can you ensure that your child is reading at least 4 times per week at home.
