Welcome to Year 2

Love. Believe. Achieve.
Love one another just as I love you. John 15:12

Miss Weigh – Class Teacher

Mrs Atherton, Mrs Haliwell and Miss Kennedy– Teaching Assistants

Welcome from Miss Weigh,

Welcome to Year 2! We are so excited to share our learning with you.

Our curriculum is built to help children learn lots of new knowledge, build a rich vocabulary, and develop a better understanding of the world around them. We believe that progress means knowing more and remembering more, so we help children to build on what they already know as they learn new things. Guided by our motto—Love, Believe, Achieve—we create a happy and caring classroom where kindness is important, confidence grows, and every success is celebrated. We enjoy learning together, believe in ourselves and each other, and always try our very best. In Year 2, children learn about animals and their habitats, explorers from the past and present, and our local hero Billy Boston. Through these exciting topics, we work hard, have fun, and aim to achieve our full potential.

At the bottom of this page, you will find lots of photographs of our learning. You can find lots of information about our learning in the curriculum pages at the top. We can’t wait for you to see what we have been up to!

Our Curriculum

Here, at St. Catharine’s, we teach our very own bespoke curriculum which has been tailored to meet the needs of all our children. Each unit has been created by the teaching team at school to promote an independent, life-long love of learning, which is inspired by the children’s interests. We hope the children will be as excited as we are! Please click on the button below to see what Year 2 will be learning about this year.

P.E.

Year 2 have PE on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school, including pumps, so that they can participate fully. When the weather is warmer, please ensure that you send a hat as the children will often be outside for P.E.

Reading

Reading is central to our curriculum and plays a vital role in developing children’s vocabulary and comprehension. In Year 2, we complete five, 30 minute reading sessions a week, following our Read, Write, Inc programme. Once children have passed their phonics screening assessment, they will then begin the school’s comprehension crusher scheme.

Each unit encompasses a range of fluency and vocabulary activities to improve reading comprehension. These sessions are also supplemented with stand alone reading sessions both in English lessons and in the wider curriculum: this supports which helps deepen their understanding of narrative structure and character development, enabling children to explore non-fiction texts and broaden their knowledge across subjects.

Year 2 spend 15 minutes at the start of every afternoon reading a class novel. This promotes reading for enjoyment and also fosters language development, literacy skills, and brain development.

Please can you ensure that your child is reading at least 4 times per week at home.

Homework

Children will receive a home learning log which will include a range of activities linked to our topic for the term. These tasks are designed to support and extend their learning in a creative and engaging way. We encourage children to complete a selection of these activities at home, and to share their work in school. This provides a great opportunity for them to explore their interests, develop independence, and reinforce what they have been learning in class.

After the Christmas break, children will begin bringing home spellings and times tables to practise, which will be checked in school.
