Welcome to Year 4

Love. Believe. Achieve.

Love one another just as I love you. John 15:12

Miss Gaskell – Class Teacher

Mrs Greehalgh, Mrs Churchhouse, Mr Nagington – Teaching Assistants

Welcome from Miss Gaskell,

Welcome to Year 4! We are excited to share our curriculum and learning with you.  Inspired by our motto—Love, Believe, Achieve—we learn side by side, appreciate our individual talents, and always strive to give our best. Our learning is brought to life through exciting topics we truly enjoy. Whether we are delving into the mysteries of the Egyptians, exploring the properties of States of Matter, or uncovering the stories of the Vikings, these subjects are among our favourites and make our school experience both fun and engaging.

At the bottom of this page, you will find lots of photographs of our learning. You can find lots of information about our learning in the curriculum pages at the top. We can’t wait for you to see what we have been up to!

Our Class Room

Our Curriculum

Here, at St. Catharine’s, we teach our very own bespoke curriculum which has been tailored to meet the needs of all our children. Each unit has been created by the teaching team at school to promote an independent, life-long love of learning, which is inspired by the children’s interests. We hope the children will be as excited as we are! Please click on the button below to see what Year 4 will be learning about this year.

P.E.

Year 4 have PE on a Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school, including pumps, so that they can participate fully. When the weather is warmer, please ensure that you send a hat as the children will often be outside for P.E. and that sun-cream is applied in the morning before school.

Reading

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and is essential in developing children’s vocabulary and comprehension skills. In Year 4, pupils take part in five 30-minute reading lessons each week. Our reading scheme is carefully structured to provide regular daily, weekly, and monthly opportunities for review, helping new vocabulary, concepts, and knowledge become securely embedded in long-term memory.

The scheme is introduced once pupils have developed strong phonemic awareness and phonics skills. Where needed, children will continue with the phonics programme until they are ready to fully access whole-class reading lessons.

Each unit includes a variety of fluency and vocabulary-focused activities designed to strengthen reading comprehension. These sessions are further enhanced by additional reading opportunities within English lessons and across the wider curriculum. This approach deepens pupils’ understanding of narrative structure and character development, while also encouraging engagement with non-fiction texts to broaden their knowledge across a range of subjects.

Year 4 spend 15 minutes at the start of every afternoon reading a class novel. This promotes reading for enjoyment and also fosters language development, literacy skills, and brain development.

Please can you ensure that your child is reading at least 4 times per week at home.
