Welcome from Mrs Fulster,
We are delighted to share our learning with you. Guided by our motto—Love, Believe, Achieve—we create a nurturing and supportive environment where kindness underpins all we do, confidence grows, and every success is celebrated. We learn collaboratively, value our individual strengths, and always strive to achieve our very best.
Our learning is enriched through a variety of engaging topics. Whether exploring the history of World War II or deepening our understanding of biomes, we approach every opportunity with enthusiasm and determination.
At the bottom of this page, you’ll find a selection of photographs that capture our learning in action. For more detailed information about what we study, please visit the curriculum pages at the top. We look forward to sharing our journey with you!

Our Curriculum
Here at St. Catharine’s, we deliver our own bespoke curriculum, carefully designed to meet the needs of every child. Each unit has been created by our teaching team to inspire independence and foster a lifelong love of learning, shaped by the children’s interests. We hope the children feel just as excited about their learning as we do!

P.E.
Year 6 have PE on a Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has a full P.E. kit in school, including pumps, so that they can participate fully. When the weather is warmer, please ensure that you send a hat as the children will often be outside for P.E. and that sun-cream is applied in the morning before school.
Swimming
Year 6 go swimming in the second half of the spring term and attend until the end of the year. Children need to bring their swimming money in weekly and a full swimming kit. More information about this will be provided by the class teachers.
Reading
Reading is a key part of our curriculum and is essential for developing vocabulary, comprehension, and a deeper understanding of the world. In Year 6, pupils take part in five 30-minute reading lessons each week.
Our reading programme is carefully structured with regular daily, weekly, and monthly review opportunities, helping pupils to embed new vocabulary, concepts, and knowledge securely in their long-term memory. Where needed, some children will continue to receive phonics support until they are ready to fully access whole-class reading lessons.
We use an adaptive teaching approach to ensure all learners are supported and challenged appropriately. This may, but not always, include targeted small-group interventions, additional phonics reinforcement, pre-teaching key vocabulary, and scaffolded tasks designed to build confidence and independence. Ongoing assessment allows teaching to be closely matched to each child’s needs so that every pupil can make strong progress as a reader.
Each unit includes a range of activities focused on fluency and vocabulary development to strengthen comprehension skills. These are further enhanced through reading opportunities within English lessons and across the wider curriculum, helping pupils to develop a sophisticated understanding of texts, including narrative structure, character development, and a range of non-fiction sources that extend subject knowledge.
In addition, Year 6 pupils spend 15 minutes at the start of each afternoon reading a class novel. This shared reading experience helps to foster a love of reading while further developing language skills, literacy, and critical thinking.
We kindly ask that you support your child by ensuring they read at home at least four times a week.
Homework
In Year 6, homework is set weekly to support pupils’ learning in school and to prepare them for their SATs. This may include assigned pages from SATs revision books or online activities using IXL. Weekly spelling lists are provided via EdShed, and pupils are expected to practise regularly. In addition, children should access Times Tables Rock Stars consistently throughout the week to develop confidence and fluency in their times tables.
