Year 5 – Other Faiths and Cultures…

Wow! What a brilliant week we have had in Year 5. We have continued our learning all about other cultures and faiths, which we started before half term. We have completed lots of activities during the week, and we have even been lucky enough to have a visitor in school, Prags from Cultural Educ-Asian Ltd.

To start the week, Prags gave us a little insight into her life, her upbringing and Hindu and Sikh cultures, which really helped us to compare the different ways of life and traditions. We were able to talk and discuss these respectfully, and we asked LOTS of questions!

During the week, we focused particularly on the Hindu festival of Diwali and learned all about what it is and how it is celebrated. To support this, Prags allowed us to use the art medium of collage, and we made our very own Rangoli art work, which is amazing as you can see from the pictures!

In class we continued the research, reading and art work. We have made Diva lamps and used paint to decorate them. The last day of Diwali is called, ‘Bhai Dooj’ and is a day when sisters pray for happy lives for their brothers. Prags explained that this is also a time when people are thankful for everyone around them, so we made friendship bracelets to give to our close friends and family.

To finish, we were also super lucky and got to try to homemade Indian food, specially made by Prags at home (teachers may have enjoyed this too)! We also danced to Bollywood music, and all in all, had such an amazing week!

We are feeling very grateful today to have had such a fantastic time!
